SHOOT 1 WORK RECORD

Preparatory Shoot 1 - 

Plans for shoot - 12/02/2019 shoot photos around Thaxted of local buildings and shops, including a model in possible suitable locations. One technique I will use will be to have my Camera in manual mode, so I am able to adjust the aperture and shutter speed suitable for the setting. 

Research - 

Irving Penn was one of the twentieth century's great photographers, known for his arresting images and masterful printmaking. He worked for many famous magazines including Vogue from 1950s to the 1970s where he had then immersed himself platinum printing in the laboratory he constructed on the family farm on Long Island, NY. The reason I have chosen his work was because of the way he used people and models to show a certain location and I tried to recreate that within my own scenes.

AO3: Record ideas, observations and insights relevant to intentions, reflecting critically on 

work and progress.

My idea for my first shoot was to look at the landscapes and scenery around me that could reflect a day out in a small town. By having casual clothing on my model it expresses how this could easily be ' a walk to the local shop' and therefore describes the certain location. When looking at the second image of the telephone box, I can see that the town looks very old and some buildings look like they could easily be from before the victorian era. By also seeing how worn away the telephone box has become it could show that it isn't really used anymore and there for attraction. In my opinion I think that this shoot could've been improved if I had a tripod as this would then have given each image a clear focused and centred view.  

AO2: Explore and select appropriate resources, media, materials, techniques and processes, reviewing and refining ideas as work develops.

In this shoot I used manual mode to be able to adjust my aperture and shutter speed for each photo, this was because certain photos had different lighting due to the sun being hidden behind the clouds and it meant that certain areas had been shadowed compared to others. After taking my pictures I then took my best images and edited them in photoshop. For 2 of my edits I decided to add a warm hue and orange filter to make the image have an old fashioned tone. The first edit of the butchers I also used curves and a gradient to add a texture to the image. 

AO1: Develop ideas through sustained and focused investigations informed by contextual and other sources, demonstrating analytical and critical understanding.

My artist research helped me develop my first shoot as it meant I had a rough idea of how to portray my first shoot. By giving me the inspiration to look at people in locations I tried to adapt that to my own work but also still look at various images of shop fronts. This then led to a strong series of images being produced that can tell a story almost of ' a walk in a town'.

AO4: Present a personal and meaningful response that realises intentions and, where appropriate, makes connections between visual and other elements.  

Overall I think that by gathering research and using my own surroundings and incorporating my own ideas I managed to develop a strong shoot, however next time I would prefer to focus on one thing, so instead of capturing images of buildings and shop fronts on their own I would stay more focused on what the model is doing in those locations. 

Progression - On my next shoot I am going to again use a model but this Time focus on their characteristics and actions in the suggested locations. I will also try using a tripod to see if I can produce a stronger series of outcomes.
